I know exactly what this is. This was likely originally made for PC artists and CAD users, and then when proper macro tablets and the adoption of dedicated macro pads started, they pivoted it into a stream deck style system for livestreaming services when Twitch started to become a thing in 2007/2008.

Does the pad also transmit a small amount of energy/EM field to power the tiny PCB inside they keys or something? Or how does it actually senses which key is pressed? I know every individual key has to has it's own electronic ID key/string but how does the pad read it incl. whether it is pressed or not. Like some form of interactive RFID?

There are modern versions of this? It looks extremely useful.
Even though a 104-key version oof this would be so nice, it also would be so big. An alternative to this for someone who wants to create a bigger, better version of this might not be to use a touchpad, but instead use that newfangled mini-LED technology to create displays of varying sizes, and a board with mezzanine connectors which would be protected with a metal grid, whereby switches are mounted, two-piece keycaps are assembled and everything is married together.
Then again that's also a serviceable revision of the Art. Labedev Optimus Maximus in my head.

the best thing with big rigs is you can't lose your "opponent " never moves they stay at the start of the level
